I am working with Free Road Entertainment to put together a number of designs for the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida's Tribal Museum and Indian Village, starting with two movie posters. Free Road Entertainment created new short films for the museum that highlight the importance of passing the tribe's cultural heritage down through the generations and the infusion of traditions of the past into modern life, and it was my responsibility to capture the spirit of the films in these posters.
Working with the Miccosukee Tribe is absolutely fascinating. Against the backdrop of the Everglades, their bright, intricate patterns of patchwork and beading jump out like jewels. The juxtaposition of the Native culture with the modern world is striking; this relationship between the past and present is a strong thread through the films, just as it is woven through the lives of the Miccosukee.
It has been fascinating to learn about the lives of the Miccosukee both historically and in the present day. The rich context behind the designs makes the project so enjoyable to work on--I'm glad it has snowballed from a few poster designs to many things yet to come: postcards, brochures, museum and village maps, DVD design, and more--as each element deepens my understanding of the Miccosukee people.
